The City’s Top Brews for All Tastes

Ballast Point

While Ballast Point has several locations and food trucks, we’ve found our favorite location in San Diego’s Little Italy. Here, you will find everything from pale ales and IPAs to stouts and porters, served alongside pub food with a gourmet take, such as fish tacos, blue cheese duck nachos, and lamb burgers, all within the range of $5.00 to $15.00.

The tasting room is open daily from 11:00am until 11:00pm, though any visitor seeking to have their growler filled or to purchase any packaged beer from Ballast Point must do so before 10:00pm daily.

Mission Brewery

Mission Brewery is located in the East Village of downtown San Diego (next to Petco Park). The brewery touts 26 national and international awards over the span of its six-year commercial brewing career, and is considered one of the top craft breweries in all of San Diego. Mission has made its tasting room out of the historic Wonder Bread building, which was built in 1894 in a woodworking style that has been lost to the public today. But most importantly, Mission offers wonderful beers, including blondes, ambers, hefeweizens, IPAs, Russian Imperial Stouts, and other seasonal beers.

While Mission Brewery does not offer food in-house, it does have a food truck, and allows outside food. In the facility, guests can watch the brewers brewing and bottling their famous beers, take a tour, and even play on a competition-length 1930’s shuffle board. Mission is also dog- and kid-friendly, a rarity among San Diego breweries, so feel free to bring all members of your family! Tours are available on Fridays, Saturdays, and Sundays at 2:00pm, 4:00pm, and 6:00pm.

Modern Times

With establishments in Point Loma and North Park, Modern Times makes it easy to enjoy their experimental brews. The brewery was founded by Jacob McKean, a former Stone Brewing Co. employee, and draws its inspiration from a “beautifully crazy utopian community” founded in 1850 called Modern Times. The names of its beers reflect this interesting and storied history, from Lomaland Saison to Fortunate Islands IPA.

Modern Times’ tasting room is a creative center in which the brewery tests its latest concepts, including variations on their traditional beers and pilot batches of beers in the formative phases. As a side note, the brewery also offers dynamic coffee blends for a post-drink pick-me-up. The tasting room’s hours of operation at both Modern Times’ Point Loma location and its North Park location run from 12:00pm to 10:00pm on Sunday through Thursday and 12:00pm to 12:00am on Friday and Saturday.
