Enjoy the Natural Wonders of San Diego with a Scuba Trip

San Diego is known for its ocean exposure and its great reefs that lie just off the shore. There are plenty of beaches that have reef exposure and give guests a chance to see into the life of a marine plant or animal. These reefs make for extremely unique and amazing San Diego scuba diving locations. If you are looking to plan a trip to go scuba diving in San Diego, make sure you check out these must-see scuba locations during your stay.

La Jolla Shores

La Jolla Shores is an underwater park that lies just off the coast in La Jolla. This area is a diver’s Mecca, so don’t be surprised if you see many other San Diego scuba diving enthusiasts in the area. Straight offshore its flat and sandy, a perfect learning location for those newer divers. Further off the shore of La Jolla lies the dark blue depths of the La Jolla Submarine Canyon, home to many different types of coral, marine life, and amazing natural reefs.

Isla Los Coronados

The three islands of Los Coronados are actually off the coast of Mexico, so the only way to get there is by boat. After a short boat ride to the islands, divers will be immersed in the underwater life of the area. The waters have a visible range of about 50-70 feet and are full of seals, sea lions, sun stars, abalone, sea slugs, and eels that populate the big boulders underwater. Most of the dive boats know the best places to take you, but a few of the favorites are Pukey Point, Lobster Shack, and the Keyhole.

Point Loma Kelp Beds

There are two kelp beds that lie off the coast of San Diego, but many experience scuba divers in San Diego prefer the one off of Point Loma. The ocean floor here consists of a series of unique pinnacles and shelves interspersed among the kelp that give you the feeling of being in a prehistoric forest. The depths of the beds vary from 35 to 80 feet, so divers can choose to go deep or stay relatively shallow. Either way, the phenomenal visibility in the area make this location a top choice for scuba diving in San Diego.
