The History
For over 100 years, our Gliderport has been fulfilling the public’s dreams of flight, with many famous pilots soaring over the bluffs of Torrey Pines on their maiden voyages, including America’s favorite pilot, Charles Lindbergh. Torrey Pines has also been responsible for flight technologies, including spoilers, which are used as a type of brake for planes. Because this establishment celebrates everything flight related, the first radio controlled model airplanes made their appearance here in the late 1960’s, a hobby that has captured imaginations from the early days and still pleases and entertains the masses today; they are still a big part of Torrey Pines Gliderport’s appeal.
The Equipment
Aviation is the mission and love of Torrey Pines, and this is the place where you can come the closest to flying on your own power. All forms of non-motor aviation occur here. Aside from the radio controlled airplanes, paragliding, hang gliding, and sail planes take off and touch down on these rocky bluffs daily, and if you don’t know how to fly some or any of these contraptions, they will teach you—classes are offered daily.
Tandem flights with experienced instructors for hang gliders and paragliders are available seven days a week; this is one adventure that will have your friends and family back home turning green with envy! Prices are reasonable, starting at $165. But don’t forget your camera! Your hands will be free throughout the flight allowing you to photograph the breathtaking scenery that makes the bluffs of Torrey Pines so special. Paragliding and hang gliding in San Diego will make for a great story when you get back from vacation!
