Details on the Birch Aquarium at Scripps
Perched on a striking La Jolla hilltop overlooking the Pacific Ocean, Birch Aquarium at Scripps is the perfect place to educate yourself on and immerse yourself in the ocean’s wildlife ecosystem. The Birch aquarium contains over three thousand different marine animals, seen by upwards of four hundred and thirty-five thousand visitors annually.
Birch Aquarium’s facility is split into several areas. The Hall of Fishes has sixty tanks devoted to Pacific Ocean dwellers, featuring everything from fish to invertebrates spanning from Mexico and the Caribbean’s tropical environ to the bone-chilling waters of the Pacific Northwest. To get a preview of this attraction, you can watch the tank live online with the Kelp Cam.
The aquarium is also home to the Shark Reef, a thirteen thousand-gallon tank brimming with sharks from tropical reef habitats, as well as panels on the biology of sharks and reef conservation. Meanwhile, Tide-Pool Plaza has three living tide pools where visitors can touch animals and learn more about them.
Other exhibits available in Birch Aquarium include the Coral Reef with its interactive displays on coral reef research, There’s Something About Seahorses featuring hands-on activities and a seahorse nursery, and exhibits on the effects of climate change and renewable energy sources. New exhibits like the Infinity Cube, which is an art installation that showcases the bioluminescence research conducted by the Scripps Institute, are always in flux, meaning that no matter when you decide to visit, there’s always something exciting to see!
The Stephen Birch Aquarium is open from 9:00am until 5:00pm daily, with the exception of Thanksgiving, Christmas, and New Year’s. Admission prices for the aquarium range from $14.00 for children ages three through seventeen to $18.50 for adults. Children ages two and under are free, and discounts are available for seniors, military members, and students with ID.
