Nestled at the northern end of San Diego’s gorgeous Pacific Beach neighborhood, Tourmaline Surf Park San Diego is a place where people from all around flock to enjoy the sun and the surf in the same incubator that birthed some of the history’s best surfers. Enjoy this scenic spot for yourself by laying out on the soft sands and soaking up some of that cheerful California sunshine, light a beachside bonfire at sunset, or get in the water and surf with the best of them!

What to Know Before You Go

If you’re planning on going for a swim at Tourmaline Surfing Park, you may want to go elsewhere; swimming is predominantly prohibited throughout the park, which is staked out for surfers, kiteboarders, and windsurfers. So, if you plan on hanging ten off of your surfboard during your time in San Diego, Tourmaline Surf Park is a must-see place for you to check out!

Outside of its renowned surfing conditions, Tourmaline Surfing Park is a wonderful sightseeing spot that also has a tribute to every big-name surfer that has ever ridden its waves. Take a look at the park’s monument up-close and you’ll see surfing legends like Skip Frye, Doc Paskowitz, and Larry Gordon—a testament to some of the greatest innovators in the sport of surfing.

Parking is free at Tourmaline Surfing Park. During April through October, dogs on leashes are allowed on the beach before 9:00am and after 6:00pm. From November through March, this time changes to before 9:00am and after 4:00pm. Onsite, you’ll also find restrooms, showers, picnic tables, barbeques, fire pits, and lifeguards for your safety and convenience needs.

Nearby, visitors can explore Crystal Pier’s terrific sightseeing to the south, such as the Crystal Pier Hotel, or the peaceful tide pools and striking rocky beach of Linda Way Beach Access to the north. Tourmaline Surfing Park also sits on the border of Pacific Beach and La Jolla, giving visitors convenient access to both of these cool cities. Peruse the bars, restaurants, and shopping in Pacific Beach, or stop by the eclectic stores in charming La Jolla.
