If you’re a fan of thoroughbred horse racing, the Del Mar Racetrack may very well be on your list of must-see places while you’re vacationing in San Diego! This racetrack was where Seabiscuit famously won by a nose in 1938, and races continue to be held here during the racing season from the middle of July to the beginning of September.
Where Turf Meets Surf
This famous racetrack is the second largest in the United States, after the Santa Anita Park outside of Los Angeles. It was constructed in 1937 under the leadership of Bing Crosby and the Thoroughbred Club. The track has been running races throughout the last nine decades, and has seen star-studded affairs, plenty of historical moments, and endless wagers. Fans continue to journey to the racetrack each summer for a piece of their own moment in history, and even as a casual viewer you’ll fall in love with the nostalgia of the racing traditions. Plus, the racetrack boasts an excellent location by the sea, meaning beautiful breezes when the weather is nice. Every season you can find the country’s top racing stars, the best horses, and lots of sunshine.
Tickets to Races and Opening Times
Tickets typically go on sale online in the beginning of May, and over the phone a few days later. Ticket prices vary depending on the type—regular admission tickets, reserved seating, and trackside dining. The regular admission tickets come in two types, Stretch Run and Clubhouse Admission. Stretch Run admission allows access to the west side of the finish line and the infield, while Clubhouse includes that and the east side. You can get a book of ten for the Stretch Run for $40, and the Clubhouse for $70—perfect for large groups! Reserved seating can go as high as $40 for opening day, and as low as $8 during the week, but expect $10 for most weekends. You can also purchase special shaded box seating for groups up to six, and trackside dining. Mondays-Tuesdays the track is open from 9 AM to 1 PM, Wednesdays-Sundays from 9 AM to 5 PM.
