Growing up, science was not our favorite subject. Having to learn pages of data, conducting experiments in which the outcome was ALWAYS wrong, even just having to memorize the periodical table of elements was just a big boring yawn. Science was a chore and no one bothered to even try to make it interesting.
But today? Cities all over the world offer science centers that make the boring not just fascinating, but so much fun kids don’t even really grasp they are being educated as they are being entertained! The Reuben H. Fleet Science Center in San Diego is one such place, and spending a day here —or even just a few hours—is one of our favorite ways to fill in empty spaces in our event calendars!
The Science Center has a long, fancy phrase for their mission statement, but it basically boils down to this: By making science fun, they encourage the youth of today to become the scientists of tomorrow! Reaching out to a wider population opens up the world of science, creating more opportunities for advancement. No longer will only the pocket protector demographic become the scientists of tomorrow, and we owe this to places like the Reuben H. Fleet Science Center!
Featuring permanent exhibits that teach about electricity, water, and our personal favorite, the tinkering studio, the Science Center offers future scientists an opportunity to invent the next new thing in a work shop filled with textiles and materials designed to spark the imagination. Work with a team or create on your own, the tinkering studio is where the magic happens!
The IMAX Dome theater gives you the feeling that you are really there, experiencing all that is shown on the first dome screen of its kind. Explore outer space through the eyes of the astronauts at the International Space Station as you watch “The Beautiful Planet,” or explore the colorful world “Under the Sea” as you drink in the movie of the same name. IMAX Dome gives you the opportunity to view the world in ways you never knew you could.
Science never sleeps, and the Reuben H. Fleet Science Center is open every single day of the year—yes, even on Christmas—from 10:00am till 6:00pm. Located at 1875 El Prado in Balboa Park, admission is free for those under the age of three and Science Center members of all ages. Guests 13 and up cost $19.95, Seniors over 65 cost $17.95, and children three through 12 can enter at the low price of $16.95.
