Marvel at Classic Cars and More
The San Diego Automotive Museum is housed in what was once the California State Building, which hosted the California Pacific International Exposition in 1935. You’ll find the museum between the Palisades Building and the Air & Space Museum, close by Balboa Park landmarks like the Hall of Champions.
Touching on not only iconic car and motorcycle designs, but their importance in culture and beyond, the San Diego Automotive Museum is more than just a hall of fame for cars and motorcycles. Here, the past comes to life for visitors from all eras, in the form of the vehicles from their childhood until now. At any given time, the museum features upwards of 80 historic vehicles.
Examples of famous cars in the collection include Louie Mattar’s $75,000 1947 Cadillac that drove across the United States and from Alaska to Mexico City without stopping in 1952, a 1969 Fiat 500 named Luigi, and a 1948 Tucker (#19). The museum is also renowned for its exquisite motorcycle collection, with a focus on the West Coast, as well as the racing bikes and movies of Steve McQueen. However, the exhibits in the museum rotate every three months, bringing in a different era of car and a fresh perspective on the past. Past collections have included the British Invasion, Steampunk, Wings and Fins – Cars of the 1950s, and Lowriders of Southern California.
