Golf has always been a classic staple of a beachside vacation, from coast to coast and even internationally! If you’re a fan of golf, look no further than the Torrey Pines Golf Course in beautiful La Jolla. This stunning golf course is situated on dramatic cliffs overlooking the vast beauty of the Pacific Ocean and has a longstanding history in the community. With lovely weather in the San Diego area throughout most of the year, this course can be enjoyed during any season, and can even be strikingly beautiful on a foggy morning.
A Historic Community Icon
On the spot of what was once Camp Callan, a military training center, legendary golf course architect William F. Bell created plans for a seaside golf course that would offer challenging play and stunning views. He passed away before seeing it completed, but his son finished the project and the Torrey Pines golf course opened in 1957, becoming a popular fixture in the San Diego golfing community and for vacationers. In 1999 it was restored by Rees Jones, who maintained the original layout while elevating it to a caliber of course that could host championships and professional tournaments.
The Seaside Course
The entire course is very picturesque, offering cliffside ocean views, towering trees, and pristine, rolling greens. It’s easy to imagine spending a tranquil morning there, or a breezy, sunshine-filled afternoon. The course offers two 18-hole courses, which you might recognize as being the spot for the yearly PGA Tour’s Farmers Insurance Open! Even better, this course is fairly easy for the public to access, which can’t be said of all championship courses. Torrey Pines Golf Course San Diego was also the site of the U.S. Open Championship and features one of the biggest golf shops in the country, with professional instruction available.
