The preserve was established in 1974 and is the sixth largest municipal owned park in the United States and the largest in California. The Mission Trails Park in San Diego is the seventh largest open space urban park in the United States and contains nearly seven thousand acres throughout the park. The highest point in the park is on Cowles Mountain and has over sixty miles of hiking trails. If you are looking into off road hiking, mountain biking, equestrian or running trails look no further. The preserve is perfect for those looking to participate in some outdoor recreation. One of the unique aspects of the park is its rock climbing area. Unlike in many of the parks in San Diego, here rock-climbing enthusiasts can get their rock-climbing fix without having to sacrifice the outdoors or their time in travel.

Along with the outdoors aspects, the park has a few upgrades that allow for a more city feel. There is a campground with 46 campsites that are adjacent to a small lake. In this area, guests can camp within city limits and visit one of the several amenities that the city provides; including a fourteen thousand square foot visitor’s center. In this center, guests are able to view the art gallery with a number of different exhibits, a 93-seat theater with Blu-Ray projection system, and complete guest lounge area.

The Mission Trails Regional Park in San Diego, CA also hosts a number of small events throughout the year. The Special Annual Events include the Amateur Photo Contest which begins in March, the Explore Mission Trails Day on the third Saturday in May and an Equestrian competition.
