Exhibits
The museum’s collections and permanent exhibits are a must see for anthropology fans. These exhibits focus on the pre-Columbian history of the western Americas, with materials drawn from Native American cultures of the South California and Mesoamerican civilizations such as the Maya.
The museum also holds one of the most important collections of Ancient Egyptian antiquities in the United States. This exhibit includes authenticated mummies, burial masks, figurines, and seven distinct painted wooden coffins. The most interesting part of this world renowned exhibit is the rare Ptolemic child’s coffin. Only six other similar coffins are known to exist in the world! The entire museum holds a total of more than one hundred thousand documented ethnographic items, more than thirty thousand books and journals, and twenty-five thousand photographic images in total.
Special Events
The museum also has periodic special events that happen throughout the year. One of the most exciting is the “Tower After Hours” event that is held three to five times each year. This event focuses on the heritage and culture of a particular cultural community in San Diego. These events are held in the rotunda and feature music, dance, food and other important cultural aspects that vary with each event. Also for all you film buffs, the Museum of Man is also the location that famous actor Chuck Norris filmed the iconic movie Top Dog.
The museum also periodically holds regular beer tastings featuring some of San Diego’s most prominent microbrewers and national craft breweries with its BEERology exhibit. This amazing exhibit showcases local San Diego beer and breweries along with national ones in an all-inclusive exhibit that shows the history of beer and its effect on cultural development. These special events are a must see!
