CUCINA Urbana San Diego

CUCINA Urbana San Diego is an upscale Italian eatery located in San Diego’s gorgeous Bankers Hill neighborhood. Bankers Hill is a neighborhood known for its remaining 19th century architecture, charming bed and breakfasts, and proximity to the beautiful Balboa Park. Dinner at CUCINA Urbana San Diego is a chance to appreciate this neighborhood. The ambience at CUCINA is upscale without being haughty. It has country farmhouse decor with modern art installations; it feels warm, inviting and chic at the same time.

Inspiring CUCINA Urbana Menu

The one-page dinner menu lacks for nothing. CUCINA Urbana San Diego offers a unique selection of antipasti, pasta, pizza and piatti (entrees in English).

It’s rare to find such a great list of unique antipasti dishes. There are a few dishes you may find elsewhere: chicken liver pate, octopus, potato gnocchi, chopped salad and blistered shoshito peppers, for example. But we especially love the stuffed fried squash blossoms, fig toast and hamachi (yellowtail) crudo. Crudo is the Italian answer to sushi, and this one has scallions, crisp chickpeas and olive citrus vinaigrette.

For pizzas, CUCINA Urbana San Diego also surprises. On the menu is a goat cheese and kale pine nut pesto pizza, a date, ricotta and bacon pizza, and a spicy guanciale pizza, which has guanciale (an Italian cured meat), marinated tomato, smoked cheddar, bechamel, Fresno chili and basil.

Dinner entrees include a beautiful burger, roasted half chicken, grilled duroc pork chop and more.

Cocktails, Wine and Happy Hour

CUCINA Urbana San Diego has a fantastic wine and cocktail bar. CUCINA is worth a visit just for the bar and happy hour nibbles. Like the menu, you won’t find most of these cocktails elsewhere. The Cocomero has cucumber and pink peppercorn infused vodka, Contratto Bianco (vermouth) and crushed watermelon and lemon. We love the name of the Stranded Sicilian, which has roasted pineapple gin, Cocchi Americano (an Italian aromatic wine) and Aperol (an Italian aperitif made with rhubarb).

Happy hour is 5-6 p.m. on Mondays, 3-6 p.m. Tuesday through Friday and 4:30-6 p.m. on Sundays. Wine is just $7 a glass, and nibbles are no more than $10. You can choose from fig toast, a margherita pizza (just $10), chicken liver pate and more.
