Black’s Beach

San Diego’s Black’s Beach is a secluded section of the beach that lies beneath the bluffs of Torrey Pines in La Jolla. Black’s Beach is a part of the Torrey Pines State Beach. The northern end of the beach is owned and managed by California’s Department of Parks and Recreation, while the southern part of the beach, known as the Torrey Pines City Beach, is jointly owned by the City of San Diego and the State Park. The distinction is important, due to Black’s Beach being infamously known as a nude beach, something that is no longer condoned by the City of San Diego and thus not allowed on the southern portion of the beach that is managed by the city.

Black’s Beach is located about three miles to the north of La Jolla Shores Beach, a popular San Diego beach known for its calm waters. The beach itself is below the bluff of Torrey Pines, which are more than 300 feet above the beach in some locations. On top of the bluff lies many different locations, but the most famous is the Torrey Pines Municipal Golf Course. Further north lies the rest of Torrey Pines State Beach and then eventually Scripps Beach.

Nude Area

Black’s Beach is not only known as the largest nudist beach in San Diego, CA, but in the entire United States. The beach is very popular with Southern California nudists and naturalists. When originally opened, Black’s Beach was one of the first and only public nudist beach in San Diego, CA. Currently, the portion of the beach that is managed by the city no longer allows guests to be clothing optional, but until 1977 the entire beach was “swimsuit optional.” The clothing optional portion of the beach begins about 100 yards south of the trail that leads to the Torrey Pines Gliderport and runs for a little over one mile to the north to the beached steel buoy south of Flatrock Point.

The southern portion of Black’s beach is a San Diego, CA surfing haven. The area is known to surfers as the location of the most powerful breaks in Southern California. The waves gain their power from the focusing effect of Scripps Canyon, an underwater canyon that runs close to the shore in the San Diego-La Jolla Underwater Park.
