San Diego’s beaches are perfect on their own. Between the great restaurants, the surf scene, and the long boardwalks, the beaches are this town’s best asset. They just get better when all of the music, beer, and food festivals come to town. So, if you’re wondering what to do in San Diego at night, then check out some of our favorite San Diego beach events and San Diego beach activities!
Ocean Beach Street Fair and Chili Cook-Off Festival
One of the funnest San Diego beach events is the Ocean Beach Street Fair and Chili Cook-off Festival! You may not associate chili with the beach, but you should. This summer festival will be 40 years old in 2019. Come taste chili samplings, play games, listen to live music, grab a beer at the beachside beer garden, and view the work of local artists on Artists Alley. The street fair stretches for blocks. This festival is a big deal in Ocean Beach, with more than 70,000 people attending annually.
Sun & Sea Festival
This summer festival in Imperial Beach, just south of San Diego, showcases the work of world-class sand castle builders. The free festival also features a kids’ zone, farmers’ market, and international food fair. Sand castles are a part of this city’s blood. Imperial Beach was the site of the U.S. Open Sandcastle Competition for 32 years, from 1980 to 2011. You can view these amazing works and vote on them. Sun & Sea Festival is definitely one of the best San Diego beach events!
One of the best San Diego beach activities is Oysferfest. Oysterfest is one of San Diego’s most beloved festivals. For two days, visitors can enjoy food, live music, beer and, if they’re brave, compete in the “shuck and suck” contest. In 2019, Oysterfest will celebrate its 20th year in San Francisco and its 10th in San Diego. We’re not talking about a rinky-dinky music festival here. Past years’ lineups have included Edward Sharpe and Magnetic Zeros, Devo, Cake, and Passion Pit, among others. Even if you’re not crazy about oysters, this festival is shucking good fun.
Fourth of July
A warm evening, the sound of rushing waves and wide, open beaches make San Diego the perfect location for a fireworks show. There are fireworks displays up and down San Diego’s coastline, so you might as well pick your favorite beach, park your beach chair, and cuddle up with the kiddos.
