If you want to visit San Diego when the weather is a bit tamer, consider visiting it in the fall. The temperatures drop and so do the number of tourists, making this a more peaceful time in the city. It’s a great season for outdoor activities in San Diego and great events like the San Diego Jazz Festival and Miramar Air Show.
Take a Walk
Cooler temperatures in San Diego present the perfect opportunity to take a beautiful walk in the city. And fortunately for you, San Diego has no shortage of great parks.
One of the most popular outdoor activities in San Diego is to v
Consider a walk in the Japanese Friendship Park for one of the most peaceful strolls in the city. This 12-acre park was designed using centuries-old Japanese techniques. You’ll feel completely at peace among the 200 cherry trees, koi ponds, large azalea, and camellia garden. The park offers one of the best ways to see fall colors come out in the trees. You’ll admire giant koi fish swimming calmly in cool ponds.
Take a Hike
If you’d prefer to get out of the city to see a vibrant display of fall colors, consider hiking one of San Diego’s many trails. We recommend Palomar Mountain to see the black oaks, alders, and canyon live oaks turning colors. This 1,862-acre park is in northern San DIego. We love Doane Pond (where you can also trout fish) and the observatory.
Fall Calendar of Events in San Diego
There are so many events throughout fall that they deserve their own category.
For arts and cultural events, we love the San Diego Jazz Festival, which takes place Thanksgiving weekend. You’ll hear every kind of jazz including traditional jazz, Dixieland, ragtime, swing, and rockabilly styles. Also consider visiting the San Diego International Film Festival and Fashion Week, both held in October.
If you want an adrenaline rush, visit the Miramar Air Show. The air show is held annually at Marine Corps Air Station Miramar. It’s a three-day event that is attended by some half a million people. It’s the largest military air show in the country. Watch as the Blue Angels, U.S. Army Golden Knights, U.S. Navy Leap Frogs, and Lockheed Martin F-35B Lightning crisscross the sky. You’ll also have a chance to view historic, static planes.
San Diego’s famous Fleet Week also is held in October. It celebrates the men and women of the military with events including Navy ship tours, a golf tournament, and a military family tailgate.
