Outdoor Adventures in San Diego
The great outdoors is undoubtedly one of the biggest draws of San Diego. With our lovely weather and the even lovelier landscape, you’ll want to spend a lot of time outside while you’re here. When you get the urge to get that blood pumping and explore the natural side of the city, here are some activities you can do!
Explore the Tide Pools
Tide pools are a microcosm of sea life that evolve in the intertidal, subtidal, and splash zones at the edge of the sea—in other words, right where the waves crash ashore, usually on rocks. This is where you’ll find crabs, anemones, sea urchins, barnacles, little fish, starfish of every color, and much more. Check out the rocky wonderland at Cabrillo Tide Pools. Make sure to consult a tide-pooling guide before you go, because the time of day is all-important due to the rising and receding of the tides.
Make Friends with the Seals
There is such an abundance of wildlife to be spotted here in San Diego. If you head up to Seal Rock, you can enjoy not only the gorgeous ocean scenery with ancient rock structures, but you’ll also see families of seals soaking up the sun, relaxing in the breeze, and squabbling for the sunniest spots. It’s quite a sight, and their doglike barking is both funny and adorable.
Walk the Beach at Torrey Pines
One of the most beautiful places in all of San Diego is Torrey Pines Natural Reserve. There are over eight miles of trails here on the bluffs that line the beach, overlooking the peaceful blue waters of the Pacific. The Torrey pine tree is a rare and endangered species with a broad, open crown that distinguishes it from its cousins. They only live in two places on Earth—on Santa Rosa Island, and here in Torrey Pines Natural Reserve. Below the bluffs is a family-friendly, sandy beach that’s perfect for playing.
Take to the Skies Over the Sea
If you head to Torrey Pines Natural Reserve to enjoy the bluffs and the beach in the morning, you’ll have enough time in the afternoon for the ultimate outdoor adventures in San Diego. With Torrey Pines Gliderport you can spread your wings and fly, right over Black’s Beach. They offer tiered and advanced lessons in both paragliding and hang gliding, and they offer tandem flights as well for beginners! After the flight of your life, you can grab a bite to eat at the Cliffhanger Cafe.
