San Diego 4th of July
July 4th is a holiday that’s hard not to love—and more like impossible not to when you’re taking part in San Diego 4th of July celebrations! Whatever your tastes, you’ll have a great time at any one of the many parties happening county-wide.
The Big Bay Boom
Their most famous display, the Big Bay Boom, is back for yet another year. It’s over fifteen minutes of choreographed fireworks going off over the San Diego Bay. This is a massive display you have to see at least once, with fireworks discharged from multiple barges all around the bay – Shelter Island, Coronado Ferry Landing, and Seaport Village, just to name a few.
For a rustic July 4th, mosey on down to the Old Town State Historic Park. This is a true blast to the past, with old-fashioned contests like cherry pit spitting or the egg toss, plus a parade and plenty of crafts the whole family will love to make and take back home. Ending at 4pm, there’s no fireworks here (after all, the frontier didn’t have them!) but this is a fantastic family-friendly place to spend the day before trekking elsewhere for a sunset fireworks display.
SeaWorld is so much more than a place to see fish swim and dolphins jump! Kids of all ages will love this Independence Day idea. This year hang out at the park all day to soak up the sun and eat great park food, but be sure to stay for the late fireworks show starting at 9:40pm. This one is a full fifteen minutes of spectacular fireworks set to music, and the perfect way to end the day.
Newport Avenue’s Ocean Beach Pier is the quintessential July 4th hangout spot. Enjoy the surf and sunshine of San Diego all day, lounging and picnicking with family and friends in the sand, going swimming in the Pacific Ocean, or simply shopping at one of Newport Avenue’s funky shops. Fireworks will start at 9pm, right from the Ocean Beach Pier, and light up the entire sky across the ocean’s horizon. Now that’s a gorgeous sight to see!
These are just the better-known parties, but while driving or strolling around San Diego, you’re bound to run into even more. Whatever you end up doing, whether by yourself or with the whole family, one thing is for sure – San Diego’s Fourth of July is going to be lit!
