Annual San Diego Bay Parade of Lights

As you begin to make your Christmas vacation plans this year, take a moment to remember how last year’s Christmas staycation went: The skies were gloomy and gray, the streets were icy and filled with slush, and you spent much of your vacation inside with the curtains drawn, drinking questionable eggnog while binge watching Hallmark Channel Christmas movies. Not a pretty picture, but this year’s Christmas vacation can be different when you plan a San Diego vacation, where the temperatures stay a cool 82 degrees year-round, the sun shines nearly every day, and in December (dates not determined yet!) it becomes time for the annual San Diego Bay Parade of Lights!

Not Your Ordinary Holiday Parade

Every year, as Christmas draws near, we make sure to take a break away from the “gotta dos” and take some time for “need to dos for our souls,” and seeking out Christmas light displays is right there at the top of our list. At least one night each December, we drive around town oohing and ahhing over pretty colors and designs-but it’s the nights of the San Diego Bay Parade of Lights that makes our Christmas celebrations truly shine. And because the Parade is held over two Sundays, we generally make sure to hit both celebrations-this parade is that special!

Featuring over 80 local boats decorated in their holiday finest, they glide serenely across the water with their colorful lights reflecting in the mirror like smoothness of the Bay. Each year brings a different theme. Last year’s was “Arrggh! A Pirate’s Christmas,” and although at the time of this article we aren’t sure as to what 2018’s theme will be, we are still eagerly awaiting what is sure to be a magical and exciting night.

The San Diego Bay Parade of Lights route starts at Shelter Island, then proceeds to Harbor Island, the Embarcadero, and Seaport Village. From there it continues on to the Pier at Cesar Chavez Park and finally ends up at the Ferry Landing in Coronado, offering six different spots for viewing along the way. Parade viewing is free, allowing you to save your money for Christmas presents and FRESH eggnog. Hey, it’s the holidays; we all deserve our vices every now and then!
