Brand new to San Diego, but already fiercely loved, the San Diego Gulls began playing in the American Hockey League (AHL) during the 2015-2016 season at the Valley View Casino Center at 3500 Sports Arena Boulevard in San Diego. Affiliated with the National League Anaheim Ducks, we are expecting great things from this new San Diego hockey team. In their inaugural year they were responsible for having the second highest attendance rate in the entire league! San Diego is definitely a big sports town and we love our teams!
Coming in second place in the Pacific Division and placing fifth in the Western Conference in their first year, the Gulls promise to be a great addition to the local sports scene. San Diego already has a love affair with hockey, having hosted several teams over the years, the last one also called the Gulls in 2006.
Dallas Eakins was hired to coach the initial season, bringing with him 11 years of coaching experience preceded by over 20 years as a player. In April of this year, he coached the newly formed Gulls all the way to the Pacific Division Finals before losing to the Ontario Reign in a heartbreaking series of four games to one. We’re not disappointed though; it always takes a new team time to gel, and when you start out doing this well, you know there’s only way for them to go, and that’s straight up with a bullet!
Valley View Casino Center opened its doors in November of 1966 as the International Sports Center and has been home to many types of sports throughout the decades. Arena football, ice hockey, and basketball teams have all called the Center their home, with many concerts and specialty events taking place in the building as well. In 1973, the Ken Norton-Muhamad Ali fight was held within the Center walls; local hero Ken Norton was declared the winner by split vote, something we still brag about today! We love our hometown boys!
