San Diego Sightseeing in the Winter

Author 01-17-2020

The best place to be during the winter months is sunny San Diego, where the weather is mild enough that you can still spend a ton of time outdoors, enjoying nature and the city. In some places, winter might bar you from exploring, but not here! Check out our favorite places for some San Diego sightseeing in the wintertime:

Torrey Pines State Reserve

This breathtaking reserve remains open 365 days a year, unlike some reserves in colder climates. The Torrey Pines State Reserve is perhaps one of the wildest stretches of coast in California, due to the respectful foresight that protected this natural area as San Diego developed around it. You don’t often see wonders of nature like this within the city limits of a major city like San Diego. People come from around the world to explore the 1,500 acres of Torrey Pines, and you can be one of them!

Whale Watching

Whale watching is the perfect sightseeing adventure because you get so much more than just a glimpse of a whale. When you embark on a whale-watching adventure you get a trip out to sea and a guide who walks you through it, explaining all the wildlife you might see. You’ll get to see the city from a gorgeous vantage point, along with other lovely sightseeing destinations, such as La Jolla Cove. And above all, you’ll get to see majestic sea creatures such as the gray whales on their yearly migration. Each year over 20,000 whales migrate south through this area, and you won’t want to miss the view as they pass by on their way home to Baja California.

Sunset Cliffs

Catch an early winter sunset at one of our favorite sightseeing spots in all of San Diego. This area is aptly named for its steep cliffs that slope off to the rolling waves of the Pacific. You haven’t seen a sunset until you’ve seen it setting over the Pacific Ocean, casting orange sparkles all across the sapphire sea. It’s the stuff of poetry, and that’s why it’s one of the most popular date spots in San Diego. Bring the ones you love for what’s sure to be their favorite sunset of the year.
