San Diego is one of the premier summer vacation destinations in all of the United States, and with our incredible beaches and attractions, it’s easy to understand why! We are also incredibly popular in the summer because we truly know how to celebrate the birthday of America better than anyone else in Southern California! If you’re planning enjoying a San Diego 4th of July holiday, here are a few of the fun events and amazing firework shows we have planned this year:
There are few better ways to celebrate the San Diego 4th of July than by spending the day relaxing on the beach and spending the night watching a beautiful fireworks celebration, and at Ocean Beach you can do just that! You can spend the day swimming on the ocean, playing volleyball on the beach, or perusing one of the many shops right nearby on Newport Avenue and cap it all off with one of the best fireworks celebrations in all of San Diego. The fireworks spectacular begins at approximately 9 PM and takes place right off of the legendary Ocean Beach Pier, so why not make it a day of fun and spending it on Ocean Beach!
San Diego’s legendary vacation hotspot is no stranger to having fun, and the 4th of July is certainly no exception. There will be a number of fun and patriotic events taking place on the island all throughout the day, including an Independence Day parade, an Art in the Park festival, and more! All of this is capped off with an amazing fireworks display over the picturesque Glorietta Bay, where fireworks will be shot off a barge starting at roughly 9 PM. This is one fireworks show that needs to be seen to be believed!
San Diego 4th of July Big Bay Boom
We saved the biggest for last—and we mean it! The Big Bay Boom is Southern California’s largest 4th of July fireworks show and promises to be bigger and better than ever this year. Starting at approximately 9 PM, four large barges in the San Diego Bay will begin to light up the San Diego sky in a way that will make your jaw drop and be proud to be an American! There’s only one word that could possibly describe this fireworks show: spectacular. There are a number of places to pull up a lawn chair and enjoy the show, including: Shelter Island, Harbor Island, North Embarcadero, the Marina District, Coronado Ferry Landing, and more!

There’s no country in the world like the U. S. of A! And to celebrate it, San Diego hosts tons of different events. When you’re looking for ways to have fun for the Fourth, America’s Finest City has you covered. Whether you’re just here for the Fourth of July or staying for the weekend leading up to it, there are plenty of ways to stay busy!
San Diego County Fair
What better place to visit a county fair than the county that homes America’s Finest City? The San Diego County Fair is winding down, so this weekend is the last time to visit for this year, starting on Thursday, June 29th. If you want rides, exhibitions, and fair food, then this is the place to visit! It’s open from 11 a.m. to 10 p.m. at the Del Mar Fairgrounds.
National City’s Lion’s Club Carnival
A classic carnival, this annual event features everything to keep the family excited. Games and rides are the main attraction, but don’t forget the carnival food! The Lion’s Club carnival also features a few special events, such as the Miss National City Pageant on Saturday the 1st and the fireworks on July 4th. It’s being held from the first through the fourth in Kimball Park.
Maritime Museum’s Fourth of July
San Diego’s Maritime Museum is pulling out all the stops for Independence Day. Sadly, their cruise featuring a broadside-assist for the fireworks show is sold out, but there are still tickets available for their Fourth of July picnic dinner! This allows guests to sit aboard the 1898 steam ferry for an impressive view of San Diego Bay’s fireworks show while they enjoy a catered picnic dinner. Plus, tickets also get your admission to the museum and its exhibits!
Annual Big Bay Boom
There are over a dozen fireworks shows that happen throughout the county on America’s birthday, but the most famous of them is San Diego’s Big Bay Boom. Four barges placed around San Diego Bay launch a fantastic fireworks show that’s visible from Harbor Island to Coronado Landing to Seaport Village, with accompanying music broadcasted on two radio stations to match. If you can only see one fireworks show this year, make it be this one!
