When one thinks of San Diego, they probably think about all of the incredible attractions and activities they can access in the city. San Diego is a prime destination for all kinds of fun, but San Diego also has a rich history that can be fully explored depending on where you look during your upcoming vacation getaway. Here are a few San Diego attractions to show you the historical side of our area during your visit:

Balboa Park

There is not a more famous historical site in all of San Diego than Balboa Park. This important San Diego site is where you can find the ever-popular San Diego Zoo, but Balboa Park is much more than that. The park is spread out on over 1,200 acres of beautiful San Diego terrain. Botanical gardens are found all across the park, giving visitors something to marvel at and take pictures. In addition to the zoo, Balboa Park also houses 15 museums, performing arts theaters, incredible restaurants, and some upscale shopping. Each of these locales are built in the eye-catching Spanish Moor architecture style for which San Diego is known. A visit to Balboa Park will probably take you all day, and that’s not a bad thing!

Chinese Historic District

While Los Angeles might be better known for its sprawling Chinatown neighborhood, San Diego’s is nothing to pass up. San Diego’s Chinatown neighborhood, also known as the San Diego Asian Pacific Historic District, is a sight to see. This neighborhood originated in the 1860s and was eventually settled by abalone fishermen. Unfortunately, most of the Asian population was not allowed to live anywhere else in the San Diego city boundaries. Luckily, that changed when the Chinese Exclusion Act was repealed in 1943 and allowed the Asian population to live anywhere in the city. Since 1987, the Chinese Historic District has been a designated historical district. The best way to learn and experience the history of the Chinese Historic District is by visiting the San Diego Chinese Historical Museum. The museum houses historical artifacts and explores Chinese culture and arts. The museum features three separate buildings and is always rotating its exhibits.

Gaslamp Quarter District

Another well-known neighborhood in San Diego is the Gaslamp Quarter. This lively district is especially known for a dazzling nightlife and some delicious restaurants. The Gaslamp Quarter District stretches out over 16 blocks and is officially on the National Register of Historic Places. The neighborhood became popular early on as many business owners made deals in the area. Alonzo Horton, a famous real estate developer from the 19th century and namesake of San Diego’s Horton Plaza, previously lived in the neighborhood too. Walking around the Gaslamp Quarter District will provide you with all kinds of historical sites and plenty of fun activities!

USS Midway Aircraft Carrier

When you take a look out onto the water off the coast of San Diego, you may catch a glimpse of the USS Midway Aircraft Carrier. The USS Midway was the longest-serving aircraft carrier, after serving a total of 47 years for the Navy and having over 225,000 service members total. It saw many battles, specifically from the end of World War II up to Operation Desert Storm. While learning about a historical vessel is fun and all, it is much more exciting to see up close in person! You can do just that with a tour of the USS Midway found in the Port of San Diego. Visitors to the USS Midway can enjoy a self-guided tour when they purchase a ticket. You will be given headphones that will play an audio tour you can enjoy at your convenience. Sit in an actual helicopter, check out the flight simulators and so much more when you take a tour of the USS Midway. Grab a unique gift to take home from the gift shop. Regardless of how you spend your time at the USS Midway Aircraft Carrier, you will remember it for years to come!

Martin Luther King Jr. Promenade

One of the most important historical figures in US history is Martin Luther King, Jr. This civil rights leader is honored with the Martin Luther King Jr. Promenade featured in San Diego. This historical monument features beautiful sculptures, fountains, and a maze of hedges. The promenade is the host of the annual MLK Day Celebration and features an abundance of activities including food and music. Come experience this historical site the next time you visit San Diego.

San Diego is an exciting and scenic city that calls to travelers from across the map in droves year after year. While it’s decidedly a place that beckons to those looking to enjoy fun outdoor adventure alongside fine dining and shopping options, it can just as easily fit the expectations of those looking to savor a more isolated stay. When you’re hoping to keep far from the crowds while still enjoying the city’s special ambiance, be sure to add the following San Diego activities to your customized itinerary.

Book a Fishing Charter

One of the ultimate routes to staying far from the crowds while still enjoying the scenery is to get out on the water. One of the best routes to enjoying time on the water safely is to book a private fishing charter while you’re in town. Consider planning your adventure with the team at Fishing Charters of San Diego for a long list of options ranging from near-shore excursions to deep-sea fun. Guests can book their trip for a few hours, a half-day or full-day of fishing depending on their preference. Either way, you’ll be on the hunt for halibut, sea bass, shark, and marlin alongside a knowledgeable and friendly guide.

Hike the Trails

San Diego is known and loved for its beaches, but it’s also an oasis of potential when it comes to hiking. The terrain is in fact dotted with a maze of hiking trails worth exploring when you’re excited to head out solo and commune with nature one step at a time. Those who are looking for the reward of sweeping views at the end of their trek will enjoy a trip through Annie’s Canyon while they’re in town. Complete with sand dunes and rugged walkways, this 2-mile loop takes hikers through Solana Beach and promises lagoon and ocean views along the way.

Find Time to Dine on the Water

While the city of San Diego is certainly packed with savory restaurants that are worth enjoying, the independent traveler looking for a way to enjoy palate-pleasing moments away from the crowd will want to consider booking a private sailing excursion during their visit. Experiences that are booked through Sail Away San Diego can be customized to include onboard dinner options as well. Whether you plan to learn to sail, can’t wait to sightsee, or are focused on the flavor and view, these personalized trips are sure to please.

Visit Sunset Cliffs

Accessed near Point Loma, Sunset Cliffs is an appropriately named secluded Beach in San Diego that offers up a sense of off-the-beaten-path tranquility paired with stunning surroundings. Find your place in the sand away from more popular beach destinations and feel free to spend an afternoon listening to the waves roll gently in. Don’t be surprised if you have a few more visitors during the evening hours as Sunset Cliffs is a delightful destination to watch evening colors stretch across the California sky.

Book a Personal Zoo Tour

The San Diego Zoo is a vibrant destination designed to highlight wildlife conservation at its finest and year-round it’s a popular place for large groups to gather and enjoy. However, those individuals hoping to experience the zoo without the stress of contending with large numbers of others can make the most of booking a private VIP tour experience while they’re in San Diego. This reservation gives guests the privilege of touring the grounds at less populated hours alongside a personal guide. It also offers up options to see behind the scenes feedings and enclosures that are otherwise closed to the general public.

Tour a Gold Mine

While the above-ground adventures in San Diego are thrilling and the on-the-water options are impressive, the lesser-known yet just as exciting options may lie below the ground. Situated in nearby Julian is the opportunity to visit and tour an 1870s gold mine for an admission price of only $10 per guest. This unique destination was first opened to visitors back in 1968 and today, continues to thrill with guided tours that lead underground through more than 1,000 feet of rock tunnels. Adding to the fun is the fact that during the tour, guests can learn about and see examples of mining techniques that were once used in this area as well as get a close up look at the equipment that made it possible.

Flying solo is a great way to experience San Diego. There’s so much to do here, and when you’re alone, you can often get a lot more San Diego activities packed into your day! Whether you’re here for a whirlwind weekend of fun or a long business trip, you’ll want some solo activities to do in town. Here are a few of our favorites:

Visit U.S.S. Midway Museum

One of the best things you can do while traveling solo are things you can’t do while traveling in groups. The more people you have, the harder it is to visit museums. Take advantage of the alone time to visit U.S.S. Midway Museum and explore at your own pace. At this museum you’ll find many exhibits featuring historical relics, theaters, and even a flight simulator. Make sure to catch the Midway Stories exhibit, where you’ll hear moving tales of U.S. heroes: aviators, sailors, and marines who have dedicated their lives to defending our home.

Go Whale Watching

Whale watching is one of the best ways to spend any morning or afternoon in San Diego. Whale watching season here runs from December to April, so it’s the prime time to catch sight of these majestic creatures as they pass through on their migrations. On a whale watching tour, you’ll head out to sea with an experienced guide who will teach you about all the sea life that you encounter. Plus, you’ll get to enjoy the rolling of the waves, and the sights of the sea itself.

Hike La Jolla Trail

The view here is to die for, and the hike isn’t too difficult. It’s a bit of a workout, but nothing too strenuous, and it’s worth it for the majestic cliffs and the sparkling view of the ocean. This is an especially lovely place to go at sunrise or sunset, when the sky changes color and transforms the landscape into something magical.

Take a Haunted Ghost Tour

If you’re looking for a wacky and fun activity to throw into your vacation, take a ride on the Ghost Coach with Haunted San Diego Ghost tours. You’ll start in the El Campo Santo Cemetery in Old Town, and hit other allegedly haunted attractions such as Sherman Heights, the Gaslamp District, before returning to the cemetery. This is quite a unique way to learn some of the weirder history of San Diego.

Take the family ice skating for a taste of old-fashioned holiday fun at the seasonal outdoor skating rink in town, which is only open for a limited time from November to early January.

Staying by the Seaside

Experience all the wonders of a trip to the seaside during your stay. The whales are migrating, which means you’ll want to grab your sea legs and a ticket on a whale watching tour. There are no other creatures in this world quite as majestic as the massive whales that make their way up and down the coast of California each year. Make sure to visit Sunset Cliffs too for the site’s namesake: a lovely ocean sunset. Consider making this spot your setting for a holiday card pic! You’ll be hard-pressed to find a better backdrop than the winter sea and the blood-orange California sky at sundown.

Beat the Crowds at These San Diego Activities

Choosing a winter getaway to the seaside means you have more sand to yourself on the beach. Going on a San Diego vacation is wildly popular—one of the most popular on the entire American West Coast, sometimes referred to as both “the birthplace of California” and “America’s finest city.” San Diego is known for its many inner-city and coastal attractions, and perhaps most of all, its gorgeous beaches.

A Mild Climate

Many coastal cities boast gorgeous beaches, but it can often be too boiling hot outside to enjoy it, or the waters can be too frigid to swim. San Diego, however, is sunny for most of the year, and the temperatures remain relatively moderate year-round as well. This makes it an excellent choice for beachgoers when the holiday season rolls around.

A Gorgeous Coastline

Here in San Diego, you’ll find miles and miles of beaches, varying so much in size and geography and locale that you’ll feel positively spoiled. Our beaches are marked by their soft white sand, a feature that makes them perfect for all sorts of beach fun. Don’t stop and swimming and beach volleyball, though! You can go fishing here too. Learn to surf, explore the tide pools, take your loved ones kayaking. You can even charter a boat out onto the Pacific. There is no end to the different ways you can enjoy your close proximity to the ocean when you stay with us in sunny San Diego.

Countless San Diego Attractions

It’s not just the ocean that draws people to San Diego! This city is alive with adventure, and you’ll find that there are plenty of San Diego attractions to visit, especially when the holidays come to town! You’ll get to visit famous natural features like Sunset Cliffs Natural Park (a great place to view an ocean sunset) and Torrey Pines Natural Reserve (a great place for spotting wild sea life such as seals, dolphins, and even bobcats). But the fun isn’t limited to nature, either. We have seaside amusement parks where you can watch the waves crash from the seat of a rollercoaster. We have a Zoo Safari Park that’s unlike any other zoo you’ve seen before. Visit seaside restaurants, one-of-a-kind museums, historical sites, national monuments, and more, only here in San Diego!

San Diego is famous throughout the world as a vacation destination. Topping the list are some of the best beaches in the world and an endless assortment of San Diego activities. But there is so much more to love about this one-of-a-kind city that you cannot understand without a bit of exploration. The following are three gems in San Diego that you will not find in the guidebooks.

The Secret Swings

Secluded along the gorgeous coastline of La Jolla, you will find one of the best places to watch a sunset imaginable. A handful of swings hanging from trees on the cliffs above Scripps Pier wait patiently for someone to discover the beauty here. The swings tend to change locations now and again, so they take a bit of finding, but it is only a short hike along the hills above Expedition Way.

Convoy Street

Convoy Street is lovingly referred to by locals as Asian Restaurant Row. This is because you can find hands down the best and most authentic takes on Vietnamese, Chinese, Japanese, and Korean cuisine. After a delicious meal, you will also find joy in walking the charming streets that these classic establishments call home. If you are in the mood for any Far East cuisine, Convoy Street is the only place to go.

Little Italy Mercato Farmers’ Market

San Diego is known for its farmers’ markets, but there are none quite like the one in Little Italy. This affair takes place every Saturday from 8 am to 2 pm, taking up nearly five blocks along W. Cedar Street in the heart of downtown. With over 200 local vendors, you can find almost anything that you can imagine from sea urchins caught that same day, the best local craft beer, microgreens cut right off the plant, and so much more. A trip to San Diego is not quite complete without a visit to this local favorite.

Find a Gorgeous Vacation Home

You also will not find all of the amazing vacation rentals in the guidebooks, because there are so many. You will find the greatest collection of incredible homes, condos, and townhomes when you look to the selection provided by 710 Beach Rentals. Whether you want to be on the water in Pacific Beach or Mission Beach or immersed in the excitement of downtown, we have what you are looking for.
