Cast aside the stress of the holiday season this year and escape to the sunny seaside. San Diego is one of the liveliest cities to visit during the Christmas season, and you’ll have your hands full of holiday fun. Save room on the best day of the year for some of the things we’re most excited about for 2019 Christmas in San Diego:
Christmas in San Diego Morning & Day
Wake up in your cozy San Diego rental and have a quiet morning indoors with a coffee in your hand and lots of love in the house. Hit up Humphrey’s (one of our favorite eateries in town) for a hearty Christmas breakfast to get you going for an eventful and fun-filled day! Your choices range from Applewood Smoked Bacon to Eggs Benedict to Belgian Waffles and everything in-between.
Afterward, head back to your seaside rental and spend a quiet morning at the beach with the ones you love, soaking in the crisp and serene morning air. Try the picturesque South Mission Beach with its soft sand, or Black’s Beach, or the pet-friendly Dog Beach. Other great ways to spend Christmas Day are quiet activities where you can enjoy each other’s company, like visiting Seaside Village and the nearby Tuna Wharf.
Take your lunch at any time between 11:00am and 4:00pm at the Catamaran Resort, where they’ll be having a Christmas Champagne Brunch.
Do something special when the evening hits. Why not take your loved ones ice skating? Head over to Skating By the Sea at the Hotel del Coronado and experience something truly magical. For one last splash of wonder, head to Sunset Cliffs before sunset so you can watch the sun setting from one of the best vantage points.
Have your Christmas in San Diego dinner at a fine restaurant in town so you won’t have to worry about the pressure of cooking. Consider Vintana Wine + Dine, located on the Penthouse Level of the Lexus Centre of Escondido and open for an early Christmas dinner. Enjoy a multiple-course meal with a gourmet entree such as the Clove & Brown Sugar Bruleed Country Ham. Make sure to treat yourself to dessert too, such as their one-of-a-kind Chocolate-Pistachio Torte.

From November through January, San Diego celebrates the holidays with parades, Santa appearances, Christmas shows, and a multitude of lights. However, there are a number of other cool events in between as well, perfectly-timed for the holiday season. Below, we’ve put together a brief list of a few of our favorite events going on over the next several months. We hope that you enjoy these events as much as we do! Happy holidays!
The revelry begins in San Diego with San Diego Beer Week, which will occur from November 4th through November 13th. During Beer Week, the San Diego Brewers Guild Festival will be held in Downtown San Diego on November 5th. Immediately after Beer Week, San Diego hosts the San Diego Bay Wine & Food Festival in the downtown area as well, from November 14th through November 20th.
While the celebrations listed above are more geared towards adults, children are sure to love the historical street fair for kids known as the Fall Back Festival, which will be hosted in Downtown San Diego at the Gaslamp Museum’s Davis-Horton House on November 6th. The Annual Mother Goose Parade (a massive holiday celebration in El Cajon) on November 20th and Santa’s arrival on surfboard at the Seaport Village on November 26th are also guaranteed crowd-pleasers, in the unique tradition of San Diego.
San Diego also commemorates the sacrifices of our country’s veterans on November 11th (Veterans Day) with the Veterans Day Celebration at the USS Midway Museum, which gives free admission for veterans and families, and the Veterans Day Parade hosted by the Veterans Museum and Memorial Center in Downtown San Diego.
You can round off the month of November with the dulcet tunes of the San Diego Jazz Fest, held in Mission Valley and Old Town San Diego from November 23rd through November 27th, or with the lively entertainment of A Drag Queen Christmas at the Historic Balboa Theatre in Downtown San Diego on November 29th.
One of San Diego’s most famous celebrations is December Nights at Balboa Park—a two-day holiday annual event that takes place on December 2nd and 3rd this year and features delicious food and drinks, plentiful musical and theatrical entertainment, and a multitude of holiday lights. You can also take the Old Town Trolley’s Holiday Lights and Sights Tour from December 2nd through December 30th for an exquisite tour experience of the San Diego festivities, or visit the Old Town State Historic Park for its Twelve Days of Christmas celebrations on December 10th and 11th.
