If you are looking to beat the cold found back home this winter, look no further than San Diego. Our coastal destination is the perfect place to escape the snow while enjoying some festive winter activities. San Diego may look a little different this year due to COVID-19, but we guarantee you will still find some exciting San Diego winter activities during your stay.
Visit the Historic Hotel Coronado for Ice Skating
While you might be missing out on snow during your winter stay in San Diego, you can still partake in a variety of winter-themed activities. One popular activity every winter is ice skating found at the historic Hotel Coronado. This city landmark can be found on Coronado Island and hosts ice skating year after year. It’s a quick drive to the Hotel Coronado and the views are more than worth it. The ice skating is held right next to the beach so you can enjoy this activity while having plenty of beachside views. Grab a bite to eat at the onsite restaurant or hit up Coronado Brewing Company on your way out for delicious food and drinks!
Stop by Balboa Park
You cannot visit San Diego without stopping by Balboa Park during your stay. Balboa Park is a huge attraction featured right in the middle of San Diego. Some of the city’s biggest attractions can be found here including the San Diego Zoo, San Diego Natural History Museum, and Fleet Science Center. While Balboa Park may not be hosting their annual winter festivities as usual you can still visit most of the attractions here. San Diego Zoo is the perfect spot to take your family and check out the hundreds of different animals hosted here. You can see amazing animals such as giraffes, lions, elephants, and so much more up close in person. The weather is fantastic during the winter so you can easily spend a few hours here. Please check with Balboa Park before you head that way to ensure attraction hours have not been limited due to the changing COVID-19 restrictions.
Visit the USS Midway Museum
If anyone in your family loves boats, you cannot pass up the opportunity to visit the USS Midway Museum. For the unfamiliar, the USS Midway is the longest serving aircraft carrier in the history of the United States. Now the vessel has been transformed into a unique museum full of over 60 exhibits. The self-guided tour lets you explore at your own pace. The boat is absolutely massive so definitely plan on spending a few hours here during your visit.
Capture Picture Perfect Sunsets
While everyone you know is back home freezing you will be enjoying the beautiful San Diego views and weather. The winter months are known to be the best time to see some incredible sunsets around the city. The best place to see them is over at Sunset Cliffs National Park. Get here just before sunset so you can walk the shoreline and see the sun drop below the horizon in the distance. Sunset Cliffs National Park also has some fun hiking path letting you explore before it gets too dark to see. Additional views can be found at Torrey Pines State Natural Reserve.
Check Out La Jolla Cove
One of the most popular parts of San Diego can be found over at La Jolla. This beautiful neighborhood is known for its Cove that is populated by majestic sea lions; you can easily get close enough to snap a few pics (but do not get close enough to touch the wild animals). Visitors can visit local beach shops to rent kayaks and snorkeling gear to jump in the water and look up at the beautiful cliff side views. La Jolla really is a magical community here in the winter season.
