It is that time of year again when the weather begins to cool off and holidays are just around the corner. While the temperatures never change drastically here in San Diego, you will still find an incredible time ahead of you during the fall season. Thanksgiving is the perfect holiday to spend time with loved ones and begin a new family tradition. Visiting San Diego around Thanksgiving provides you with plenty of exciting events and activities exclusive to the area. Take a look below at how you can spend Thanksgiving in San Diego this year:
Thanksgiving Dinner at Home
One of the most important traditions for any Thanksgiving holiday is having a home cooked meal right at home. Family comes over and shares the meal with loved ones. You do not have to get rid of this tradition when traveling to San Diego. Our vacation rentals come with everything you need to make a delicious home cooked meal right at the property. Expect to find spacious kitchens inside each of our properties. These are not tiny kitchenettes but full-size rooms just like you have at home. Full appliances including fridges, stove/oven combos, and dishwashers make it easy to prepare each dish at once and store any leftovers you have. You will find that the cabinets have all of the pots, pans, and utensils needed to prepare each entrée. Spacious granite countertops offer plenty of room and are easy to clean too. Once you have everything prepared you can easily set up the dining room table for your Thanksgiving feast. Take advantage of the breakfast bar where additional guests can find a place to sit down at.
Thanksgiving in San Diego would not be complete without a variety of events that will help make your vacation one to never forget. Most cities across the country host a “turkey trot” or themed race to help raise proceeds for local charities. San Diego does not have just one but two different turkey trots to check out. Father Joe’s Thanksgiving Day 5K Run/Walk is located at Balboa Park and helps local homeless shelters in San Diego. Feel free to run or walk this short race and purchase a freshly baked pie from the vendors (reservations in advance are required for purchase). Pets, wheelchairs, and baby strollers are all encouraged during the race so the whole family can participate. Another great race is the Oceanside Turkey Trot, taking place at Oceanside Pier. This trot features a 5K run/walk path and a 10K run path so you can pick and choose the level of your race. Additional options for the race also include a 1-mile path for seniors and children and a ¼ mile path for tots. The race will take you by incredible locations such as the Oceanside Harbor so you can run with a great view. Each race requires a registration prior to joining in on the festivities.
The fun continues in San Diego even after the holiday has passed. Santa Arrives at Seaport Village is an annual tradition where So Cal Surfin Santa shows up just in time for the holiday season. This isn’t your typical Santa as he shows up in flip flops and board shorts making for a hilarious photo shoot with the kids. The Julian Christmas Tree Lighting will also take place on November 27th where this nearby historic town has their tree lighting. This free event starts at 4:00 PM with caroling before the tree lighting at 6:00 PM.
Local Thanksgiving Dining
If you do not want to prepare your own Thanksgiving meal, you can always dine in at one of the many incredible restaurants in the area. Fine dining has never been better that it is at Mister A’s. This elegant French eatery has gorgeous skyline views of the bay and a menu that will not disappoint. Grab Thanksgiving brunch by stopping by Farmer’s Bottega where you can find plenty of early morning eats. Island Prime features a decadent menu of prime cuts of steak that are always cooked to order. You can also try out some of the delicious and fresh seafood that is rotating on the menu. Each of these restaurants are open on Thanksgiving with their usual menu along with a few Thanksgiving specialty entrees. Don’t miss out on the incredible restaurant scene found right here in San Diego.
