Where to Find the Best Handcrafted Cocktails in San Diego

Author 01-20-2020

Whether the sun is high in the sky or has long sunk beyond the horizon, you’ll be able to find a good cocktail in San Diego. When you’re on vacation, it’s always 5:00, and there are endless places to find a tasty, handcrafted drink. Here’s a handy list of our favorites to give you a jumping-off point.

Realm of the 52 Remedies

This is a cool little hole-in-the-wall place where you can easily spend a whole evening. Realm of the 52 Remedies is a Chinese-inspired speakeasy hidden inside Common Theory (you’ll have to pass through a special door and put your hand over a special symbol to get through, and it’s as neat as it sounds). The drinks here are delicious and even come with small attentive details like logo-decorated ice cubes and smoke-infused drinks to add a splash of extra flavor.

Cutwater Spirits

This is the place to go if you want standup service and a homerun menu from a well-established cocktail bar. Cutwater Spirits does not mess around; they really know their stuff! Check out their website and you’ll see all the creative cocktail recipes they’ve cooked up over the years. We recommend the Monkey Business, made with Cutwater Bali Hai Tiki Monkey. Their other featured cocktails right now are the Dark ‘n Stormy, made with dark rum that’s distilled from 100% pure cane sugar (which makes a world of difference), and the Hibiscus and Roses, made with an award-winning hibiscus flavored vodka.

Polite Provisions

This cocktail bar is one of our favorites for an early afternoon weekend drink. Many cocktail bars don’t open until 5:00pm or later, but this one opens early (11:30am) Friday-Sunday! For a light afternoon cocktail packed with flavor, try to the Isla Bonita, mixed with white rum, sparkling rosé, raspberry, lemon, and Peychaud’s bitters. If you’re stopping in for some evening drinks, consider the flavorful Miles to the Sun cocktail, mixed with oat whiskey, white rum, Aperol, blood orange, grapefruit, and lime. This one packs a truly unique and interesting flavor, which is half the fun of trying new cocktails in new cities. They even offer cocktail classes here to help spread the art of making great cocktails. Check their website for dates.
