Winter in San Diego

Author 11-11-2018

Whether you are traveling to San Diego for the warm winter or are taking a holiday trip with your family, the city has plenty of fun activities during the winter season. Here are some of the top events happening during the winter in San Diego.

Balboa Park December Nights

Every December, Balboa Park holds a two-night event to celebrate the holidays. This year’s event will be held on December 7 – 8. All museums and institutions in the park are free and open to the public. Festivities include live music, caroling, light displays, food from around the world, theater, and dance performances.

Dr. Seuss in Balboa Park

Talk a walk in Balboa Park and enjoy the holiday lighting. Make sure to stop by the Old Globe Theater to take a trip to Whoville. The theater has a display of Dr. Seuss’s How the Grinch Stole Christmas to correspond to their annual performance of the book. The snow-covered Whoville display will be up from November 3 – December 29. You can also purchase tickets for the theater performance on the Old Globe Theater’s website.

San Diego Bay Parade of Lights

Enjoy the sparkling waters of the San Diego Bay as nearly 100 boats put on a holiday lights display. The annual Port of San Diego Bay Parade of Lights is held for two weekends over the month of December. This year’s parade will take place on December 9 and December 16. Some of the most popular spots to view from land are Harbor Island, Shelter Island, the Embarcadero, Seaport Village, Coronado’s Ferry Landing, and Cesar Chavez Park.

Winter Whale Watching

Each winter in San Diego from December – April more than 20,000 gray whales make the 5,000-mile trip from Alaska to the warm waters of Baja, California where the females give birth to calves. You can watch these whales traveling south for the winter from the shores of San Diego or take a chartered boat ride off the coast. Whales typically travel alone or in pods of two but during peak migration season they are typically in much larger groups.
